Reach Security has published a new 12-month telemetry report examining how configuration drift creates persistent security risk across enterprise environments. Drawing on data from more than 50 production environments alongside independent research of 250 U.S. cybersecurity professionals, the report found that organizations generated an average of 13 drift alerts per day, with 92% tied to genuine, risk-prioritized exposures. Firewalls accounted for the largest share of material findings, followed by endpoint detection and response tools.
The research also found that configuration drift often increases during predictable periods such as patch cycles, vendor updates, holidays and month-end activity, when routine changes can cause security controls to diverge from their intended state. Reach Security argues that traditional point-in-time reviews are no longer sufficient, particularly as AI accelerates the speed of attacks, and recommends continuous validation, threat-informed prioritization and faster remediation to help organizations keep security controls aligned with real-world risk.
